Third edition of USA copyright office compendium – copyrightable authorship in musical works

A musical work must originate from the author of that work to be protected by copyright. A musical work that is merely copied from another source is not copyrightable. KFC has been sued for copyright infringement in Russia

Two actors, featuring in promotional KFC’s advertising videos, have sued Russian KFC for copyright infringement. They seek 31 million Roubles compensation. These actors have concluded with KFC contracts for participation in KFC’s advertising campaign in 2014. They claim in 2017 the term of KFC rights have expired and KFC had to conclude new agreements or seek new permission, but did not do it.

Yandex gets ready to the battle with right holders

Right holders in Russia claim Yandex does not do enough to fight piracy, it could be said otherwise – right holders accuse Yandex of facilitating internet piracy in Russia. Certainly Yandex denies all accusation and claim it works strictly in accordance with current Russian law, including copyright law. Right holders don’t believe Yandex. They believe Yandex makes money on piracy.

Russian TV channels asked the court to block Yandex for copyright infringement

Russian TV channels, belonging to major Russian media holding Gazprom Media, have applied to Moscow court for preliminary measures in relation to Russian search engine Yandex for copyright infringement. The court sided with applicants and notified Russian internet watchdog Roskomnadzor thereof.

A few major Russian media companies – Gazprom Media, National Media Group and The First Channel – have taken off their online broadcastings from main page of Russian search engine Yandex’s due to piracy accusations. Media companies not alone in their concerns. Not so long time ago right holders in entertainment content have accused Yandex of piracy.

The use of word “Origami” in its literal meaning is not a trademark infringement

One natural person has registered trademark in Russia. According to registration this natural person was stated as owner of exclusive rights in trademark in question in the form of paper crane. The trademark has been registered for the sushi. After the registration this person has concluded asset management agreement with ltd company and three individual enterprises, Individual enterprises were asset managers. The rights owner was the constitutor of asset management under the concluded agreement.

Russian major bank Sberbank has been accused of copyright infringement

This year the Russia hosted World Football Championship 2018. There were many fascinating moments during the championship, including the short video of Brazilian football fan. This video became popular and turned into different memes.
