Russian patent service deprived 19 companies of the right to use brand under the place of origin

In Russia there is famous natural spring – Essentuki. The Russian mineral water under the brand Essentuki is produced there. Only couple manufacturers can use this brand simply because they have productions in Essentuki. They manufacture bottled water and sell it under the brand “Essentuki”. But it does not mean that other companies don’t want to use the known brand. They also produce water, despite the fact that their manufacturing located far from Essentuki.

The draft law on internet autonomy has been upheld by its potential main executors

The Russian Ministry of communication and internet watchdog (Roskomnadzor, RKN) have upheld the draft law on autonomy of Russian internet. The draft law would authorize RKN to control the traffic route in Russia. The RKN would have the authority to define the rules for traffic route and communication operator, at their own risk and responsibility, would oblige to comply with such rules. More over RKN should ensure that minimum of Russian internal internet traffic passes through overseas traffic exchange points.

Stakeholders negatively assessed the consequences of law on Russian internet autonomy

The stakeholders – mostly the companies who would be main subjects of proposed law – negatively assessed the law on autonomy of Russian internet. According to the assessment the provisions of law don’t coincide with declared aim to ensure the stability of Russian internet and Russian internet resources. The stakeholders believe the provisions of law would cause overloading of operators’ communication networks, network failures and significant increase in costs, including budgetary costs.

It is proposed to use only Russian equipment for execution of Yarovaya law

The Russian ministry of communication, Federal security service and ministry of trade have jointly proposed to oblige Russian communication companies to use only Russian equipment for execution of Yarovaya law. In other words, only equipment, produced in Russia, can be exploited in order to keep all users’ communications within certain period of time for enforcement purposes.

The law aiming to protect Russian authorities from criticism in internet has no wide support

But it still can be adopted. The law aims to forbid persons to insult Russian authorities in internet; otherwise the person can face fine up to 5 thousands Roubles or even can be arrested for 15 days. The Russian ministry of communication does not support the draft law. The deputy of the minister has said “the one of the duties of Russian authorities is listening the criticism of their work calmly. They are not so impressionable.”

New antipiracy memorandum for book publishers has been proposed

Recently audiovisual right holders have signed antipiracy memorandum with Russian search and IT companies like Yandex but without participation of Google. The main goal of this memo is de-indexing links to pirate web-resources without court order and elimination of all such links from search results. Russian search engines have signed this memo, but without enthusiasm. Book publishers and right holders also want to sign similar memo, because IT counterparts of memo underlined that the memo covers only audiovisual works.

Russian authorities intend to provide liability for those who insults them in internet

Russian authorities decided to protect the purity of morals in Russian internet and clear out “all negative words” of insulting character, but only in relation to Russian authorities. In other words mass media, bloggers and any person can write in internet anything negative about any authorities except Russian in Russian segment of internet. In other words if you write something negative about Russian politician you could be punished in Russia under proposed law.

New draft law on autonomy of Russian internet has been introduced

Russian legislators have introduced new draft law aiming to guarantee an absolute autonomy to Russian segment of internet. Under proposed draft law the Russian internet watchdog would receive broad authority. The main purpose and objective of law is protection of Russian internet from external threat. The draft law provides regulation for traffic routing and control over compliance with this regulation.
